Don, I'm sure this subject has been worn out but let me beat this dead horse a little more. When is something going to be done about electricians doing inside wiring? Just because its considered low voltage wiring doesn't make them qualified to install it.
Don't get me wrong, I have seen some quality work by those who take the time to go through basic telecom training but its rare. Usually what I see is the cheapest wire they can get and then daisychain it, you know the old dollar store r/grn-blk/y wire - 100ft for $2.00.
I actually had a customer who built an addition onto their home (about 100k worth), and the electrician bid to do all the wiring, the customer paid for and got Cat5E installed to 10 jacks which is good except it was ran horizontal through the walls, daisychained and tie wrapped to the power (cust took pics through out the build).
And did I mention that their new home office is at the far end on the last jack and they need their DSL to work there. I asked the electrician why he didn't home run the jacks and he didn't know what I was talking about!
The only option is to pay us to go in and rewire the addition. This isn't an isolated case either, I have seen this done on homes in the million dollar range as well.
Is there anything in the works to require them to go through basic telecom training? If not I think there should be, because the customers shouldn't have to pay twice for something that could be avoided. |
